Are you ready to tie the knot- in a rope and take your relationship to the next level? Rock climbing is an active way to quickly tell a lot about your potential partner’s personality. Whether it is your first or fifteenth date, a day on the wall will push your physical and mental limits, test your trust issues and hopefully, strengthen your relationship.
Your date begins at an indoor climbing facility. If you haven’t climbed before, schedule a class for the two of you to learn how to secure your harness, how to hold the rope while your partner climbs and the way climbing routes work. The instructor will show you various safety techniques and the necessary equipment, which can be rented at most gyms. Similar to bowling shoes, you can rent climbing shoes that are designed to help you “stick” to the rock wall surface.
Rock walls have colored tape placed on various hand and foot holds to show you which ones to use as you climb. Routes are also given ratings from beginner to advanced levels. Beginner climbs typically have larger holds. As you climb, you put together a puzzle of hand and foot motions to successfully reach the top of the wall, so rely on your mental ability to plan the route instead of just muscling-up the wall like a superhero.
A typical route at an indoor facility uses a top-roping technique that has two ends of the rope on the floor and the middle of the rope passing through a secure clamp in the ceiling. The walls are on average between 40 and 70 feet high. You secure one end of the rope to your harness using a Figure 8 knot and your partner passes the other end through a belay device in which he or she will take up the rope’s slack as you climb. This is where the trust begins. You are trusting your partner to watch your every move, anticipate if you need a tight rope or slack in the rope and to not let go of the rope should you slip off the wall. If you have a good partner, your intimacy grows and you connect with eye contact and unspoken words. As your partner watches you climb, or when you watch your partner climb, you learn the rhythm of the body and how to match your movements together.
You share in the excitement when one of you reaches the top of the wall. The feeling of empowerment in your own body is overwhelming and you know you can accomplish anything. Your self-confidence is at an ultimate high. Plus, you accomplished this together and you cannot wait to return to the earth and hug your partner. With hearts beating strong, eyes sparkling and big smiles on your faces, you cannot wait to move to the next route. At dinner after, you can recall all the details of your adventure as you increase your bond and plan your next date.
